The time between February and June is usually considered the ideal time for a visit, when the dry weather draws many of the animals out to the park’s waterholes. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, May and June offer the right atmosphere for a serene, contemplative safari.

How to Reach the Park

Yala National Park is in the southeastern region of the island, and there are a few ways to reach it. From Colombo - You can take the train to Matara, then continue to the park by bus; take a bus from Colombo to Tissamaharama, and a tuk-tuk from there to the park; or hire a private driver or taxi from Colombo to Yala. From Ella - There are regular bus services that take you from Ella to Tissamaharamaya, and from there you’ll need to take a tuk-tuk to the park. You can even hire a cab or private driver to take you along this route. From the Southern Coast - You can reach Tissamaharamaya from the likes of Mirissa and Hiriketiya via bus or private transportation. You can even take the train to Matara, then travel to Tissamaharama by bus or taxi.

Biodiversity and Habitats

Yala is best known for its leopard population, as it has the highest concentration of this elusive creature of all the island’s parks and reserves. Elephants are another highlight, as are sloth bears, crocodiles and buffalo. Jackals, wild boar, macaques, and monitor lizards also call the park home. The park is also a bird watcher’s paradise with over 215 species, including hornbills, painted storks and the migratory waterfowl. The park’s landscape is also varied, featuring forests, dunes, lush lagoons and open plains.

What to Wear & Pack

Lightweight breathable clothes in neutral colours are the best choice, as these will help you stay cool and comfortable, and keep you blended in with the natural environment. Long sleeves, long trousers and sports shoes are ideal for staying safe from the sun and the mosquitoes. Water, snacks and wet wipes are good for staying hydrated and energised, and a pair of binoculars or a quality camera will be ideal for capturing those rare sightings.

Activities & Excursions

Safari tours are by far the most sought-after experience at Yala, as they allow visitors to explore a larger part of the park and see a variety of animals. Guided bush walks are also available for those who prefer a truly immersive experience. Bird watching excursions in the early morning hours can also be arranged, giving bird watchers the perfect chance to catch sight of vibrant species. • An early start is best. The park opens at 6 AM, so arriving at the gate by 5.30 means you’ll get to explore when the air is cooler, and the wildlife is active.
• Always follow your guide. They have plenty of experience and always know the best parts of the park to visit.
• Avoid interacting with the animals or making too much noise that will startle them. The best encounters occur when you observe quietly.
• Do not litter or pollute the park’s environment, as this can affect the habitat conditions for the animals.
