Whale Watching in Sri Lanka: Witnessing the Ocean’s Gentle Giants

Sri Lanka is often praised for its rich land biodiversity and the many adventures it offers, but for those who love the ocean, whale watching remains one of the island’s top highlights. Due to its location, Sri Lanka offers adventurers ample opportunities to catch sight of the ocean’s majestic, gentle giants at different times of the year. Here are some of the key things to know when preparing for a thrilling whale watching excursion in Sri Lanka.

Where to Go for Sightings

Sri Lanka lies along the route for the annual migration of blue and sperm whales, which takes place between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. This means that there are several spots on the island from which you can catch sight of whales, at different times of the year.

Types of Whales to See

The southern coastal area of the island is known for having sightings of several species, including blue whales, sperm whales, right whales, killer whales and whale sharks. Meanwhile, the Trincomalee coastline is where you’ll see pods of blue whales, sperm whales and the occasional killer whale. Additionally, groups of playful dolphins have been known to make appearances during whale watching excursions in Sri Lanka. Several species, including common dolphins, spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and striped dolphins, are often spotted in the south, while the east coast often yields sightings of spinner, striped, bottlenose and Risso’s dolphins.

Packing for Your Adventure

Wearing your most comfortable, breathable attire is recommended, no matter which area of the island you’re visiting, as this will help you better brave the hot conditions. You’ll also need to bring sunscreen and keep applying it to keep your skin safe from UV rays. Tour operators will often provide the necessary protective gear, as well as snacks and water, although it is best to confirm this beforehand. It is also important to bring any prescribed medications with you, along with motion sickness tablets if you aren’t used to the ocean’s rhythms - this is important since excursions can last for several hours.

Choosing Your Tour Operator

Tour operators are plentiful in Mirissa, Trincomalee and Kalpitiya, but choosing one should be done after careful consideration. It is best to check whether the tour operator has the right up-to-date certifications and whether they follow all the relevant safety measures. You can even look up online reviews and testimonials to get a better understanding of their reliability and tour quality. Operators that provide snacks and light refreshments are always worth considering.
