Here’s a quick guide to exploring this vibrant city for the first time.

The Best Time to Visit

Colombo is a year-round city, with its peak tourist season falling from December to April. The air is cooler, and the skies are clear blue - perfect conditions for exploring and taking in the city’s vibe. March and April are some of the hottest months in Colombo, but mid-April is when the city goes quiet, with everyone heading out of the city for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. It’s nevertheless a great time to be in the city, where everything is calm, and there’s no mad rush to overwhelm you.

The Length of Your Stay

If Colombo is just one stop on your journey around Sri Lanka, then two nights in the city are enough to explore its highlights. But if you’re eager to really get a feel for its rhythms, four to five days gives you ample time to walk along its streets, visit the cafes and explore the malls at your own pace. You’ll even have time for a cultural tour or two, and some time at the beach.

Travelling Into & Around Colombo

Most international flights to the island land at Bandaranaika International Airport (BIA), which is just a 35-minute drive north of the city’s centre. From there, you can get the air-conditioned 187 bus to reach the main bus stand in Pettah. You can then use a ride-hailing app like Uber or the local PickMe app to reach your hotel. Colombo is pedestrian-friendly, if you think you can bear the heat. Buses are one of the cheapest modes of transport, but they can get overcrowded and hot. Ride-hailing apps are the most efficient way to get around, as they offer multiple vehicle options (tuk-tuks, cab cars, vans), clear pricing and the most convenient routes based on real-time traffic patterns.
