Sri Lanka’s sublime coastline harbours a wide array of marine life, including a large sea turtle population, warranting closer inspection. Detailed below is how you can enjoy the pastime of turtle watching.
Hugging a portion of Sri Lanka’s south coast is the charming town of Hikkadwua which will serve as a wonderful introduction to viewing and better yet, snorkelling in the company of sea turtles. Make sure to walk towards the left side of Hikkaduwa Beach which is where these mammals are known to commune. The sea turtles can be easily spotted from the shore and for the best experience, you can try picking up seaweed and feeding the animals as they swim towards you. While touching or picking up a sea turtle is a prohibited practice, you can go a step further, put on your snorkelling gear, and spend time well away from likeminded tourists where you will have the best seat in the house to observe the behavioural patterns of these species.
The laidback fishing hamlet of Rekawa plays host to the much adored Rekawa Beach which is reputed as a sea turtle breeding ground. Turtle watch evenings are its main attraction where under the direction and supervision of the Rekawa Turtle Watch, you can ready yourself for a splendid evening involving catching a glimpse of turtles laying their eggs. Arrive no later than 8.30 pm and after you have settled, your attention will be drawn to the numerous nesting grounds on the beach where with some luck and patience, you will be able to watch as female turtles lay between 50 to 150 eggs. Expect to spend a good amount of time as you will be treated to priceless moments with respect to the sea turtle as it digs its nest, lays its eggs and carefully proceeds to cover the nest before returning to the ocean. Importantly, take note of the nesting season which stretches out from April right through July ahead of scheduling a sea turtle watching expedition in Sri Lanka.
Make plans to visit Pigeon Island nestled along the country’s eastern coastal belt where you will find ample opportunity to come into contact with a host of sea turtle species that reside in these waters. Encounter picturesque coral gardens and a moving medley of aquatic life that call Pigeon Island National Park ‘home’ en route to swimming alongside the Green Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle as well as the Hawksbill Turtle. What’s more? Have your underwater camera ready to zoom in on the allures of the National Park that would make for excellent memories to take back with you. However, the most favourable time to visit will be during May and October while anytime between 8 am and 10 am will be ideal to experience more calming ocean waters.
Associated with serene panoramas and laidback vibes as brought to light via So Sri Lanka is the holiday destination of Mirissa. Although this scenic destination is well known for its whale watching expeditions, it offers the opportunity to discover sea turtles, too. Located at the farthest end of Mirissa Beach is Coconut Hill where you will have a chance to spot these creatures coming up for air before swiftly disappearing out of sight. While it isn’t recommended to swim in these waters, one’s attention ought to be diverted towards the bay which is located just before Coconut Hill. Although, in terms of numbers you will not have a similar experience when compared with other locations in Sri Lanka, the keen snorkeller in you will find all the reason in the world to lie in wait for the spectacle to unfold.
